Stichting Onderwijs Oost-Afrika (Education East Africa Foundation) was founded and notarised in Amsterdam in August 2010. In July 2011 it retroactively obtained the status of a Public Benefit Organisation (ANBI), which makes donations exempt from tax.
The foundation aims to give underprivileged children in the region access to education, to provide them with the skills to make a living. It does so by offering financial and material support to educational institutions by raising funds in the Netherlands and abroad.
The foundation is run by volunteers and operates on a non-profit basis. The board consists of Djûke Poppinga (chair), Marijke Wessel (secretary), Rianne Tamis (treasurer), Marcel Piters (website), Marjan van der Horst, Khalid Eltayeb, and Elseline Tuinier (members).
Contributions made in the Netherlands are transferred directly to the schools. Both the board members and the local intermediaries overseeing the proper use of the funds act entirely selflessly.
