A safe start for Sudan’s children
In 2009, Salwa Abdelrahman saw toddlers and preschoolers roaming the streets of a struggling suburb in Khartoum while their mothers worked tirelessly as washers or cleaners.
Daycare was out of reach for most families, so Salwa decided to act. Using her resourcefulness, she built a thatched shelter in her mother’s courtyard and opened a small nursery, giving these children a safe place to grow and learn.
At first, Salwa funded the nursery herself, selling household goods, bedding, and later her self-decorated shawls. “Many mothers couldn’t afford more than small installments,” she says, “but that’s how we help each other.”
Committed to the little ones
Salwa’s connection to the challenges of her community runs deep. She grew up in the Nuba Mountains, where, as a young child, she was expected to tend goats. Inspired by her older sister, Salwa insisted on going to school, eventually earning a university degree in office management after her family was forced to flee to Khartoum during the war.
Though she couldn’t find formal employment after her studies, Salwa poured her dedication into volunteer work, teaching women in her neighborhood to read, write, and use basic mobile phone features. Over the years, she has built a close-knit group of 25 women who support one another in navigating daily life’s challenges.
Care and food
Salwa’s nursery has become a haven in the community, offering not only care but also a simple breakfast for children whose families often face food insecurity. Her dream? To expand beyond preschool and open a class for children over seven who are unable to attend school—giving these vulnerable kids a chance to learn and avoid being left behind.
“To me,” Salwa says, “helping others is personal. When I was younger, life wasn’t easy, but I managed. Now, I want to help others do the same.”
