Help children in Sudan build a future through education

Learning on an empty stomach: it is the harsh reality for many school children in East Africa.

For just £10 a month, you can give a child in Sudan access to education and a daily meal.

Imagine this…

Yes, just imagine being born in a poor suburb of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Your parents and grandparents ended up there after fleeing the wars in Darfur or the Nuba Mountains.

Your mum never went to school herself; she now works as a cleaner. Your dad is a day labourer with an unreliable income. So, there’s no money for a good private school. And at state schools, with sometimes over 100 kids in a single class, there’s hardly any real learning happening.

Enter the self-help school, a source of hope for kids from the poorest families in Sudan. Not only do they get an education there, but also a daily meal — often the only one they’ll have all day.

Self-help schools in Sudan

Back in 2017, the Elrayan School was founded in a poor area of Omdurman, Sudan’s largest city.

What started as a small Christian primary school has grown into a beloved hub for all neighbourhood kids, including Muslims. And the academic results speak for themselves!

For over 15 years, Salwa Abderrahman has been giving preschool children from a poor area in Khartoum a safe space to be.

Here, they get an education and breakfast, so they don’t have to wander the streets every day while their (mostly single) mums are out working.

This extraordinary school for children with disabilities is located on an island in the White Nile.

Psychologist Hanadi Eisa set it up, inspired by her father, who once built 100 schools but couldn’t find a place for his own son.
